Created in 2009, the Alameda Green Schools Challenge supports the comprehensive recycling and composting programs across Alameda Unified School District. The program began with pilot programs at five schools and has since expanded to all schools in the district, and charter schools within the city limits. As of 2013-14, the amount of waste the district recycles or composts has grown to 68 percent, up from 41 percent before program implementation.
